Mission of the Undergraduate Program
Oceanography is a story of curiosity, challenge, entrepreneurship, stewardship and discovery. The undergraduate program draws upon these attributes, provides a program of liberal scientific education, and prepares students for graduate school or a professional career in an ocean-related endeavor.
To achieve these goals students acquire an understanding of basic scientific principles prerequisite for the quantitative study of the oceans, and learn to see the difference between oceanography--as an environmental science-- and the basic disciplines (e.g. mathematics, chemistry, biology etc.). The training of students in the techniques and methodologies of research form a common thread for research and teaching faculty in the School, and a healthy School requires an active and vigorous undergraduate program where students are encouraged to reach their maximal potential and to contribute to the School's core scientific mission of bringing to fruition first rate research.
