Puchkov (Geotectonics, 43(1), 1-17, 2009) Paper Discussion 2. The Assignment and the paper: Kinematics and geometry of active detachment faulting beneath the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) hydrothermal field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge by B. J. deMartin, R. A. Sohn, J. P. Canales and S. E. Humphris (Geology, 35(8), 711-714, 2007) Paper Discussion 3. The Assignment and the paper. The Subduction Factory: How it Operates in the Evolving Earth by Y. Tatsumi (GSA Today, 15(7) 4-10) Paper Discussion 4. The Assignment and two short papers (you will read them both). Mohrig (EOS, 90(42) 373-384, 2009) Background Reading (By Lecture): The following reading is not required but can help you learn more about a topic or clarify parts of the class that are unclear Lecture 1. Earth Structure and Plate Tectonics Lecture 2. Evidence for Plate Tectonics from Magnetics Plate Tectonics: An Insider's History of the Modern Theory of the Earth edited by Naomi Oreskes. A very readable book with chapters by the scientists who discovered plate tectonics for students who are interested in the history of the topic Lecture 4. Cooling of the Ocean Plates (Lithosphere) Lecture 5. Seismology Wikipedia has a good short page on reflection seismology. Lecture 8. Phase diagrams - There is a good description of 2-component phase diagrams on Prof. Stephen Nelson's web site at Tulane University Lecture 10. Mid-Ocean Ridges - Mantle Melting and Crustal Structure Lecture 12. Faulting and Earthquake Focal Mechanisms Lecture 13. Subduction Zones Lecture 15. Physics of Sediment Transport Lecture 16.
