Reading Assignments

January 10 -
We will discuss parts C, D &E (pp36-61) of: IPCC (2001) Climate Change 2001: the scientific basis, Contribution of Working Group I in the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Houghton et al., eds.), Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK and New York, NY, USA, 881pp. download reading
To learn more about the IPCC report check out www.ipcc.ch

January 24 -
We will discuss Toggweiler and Sarmiento (1985). Glacial to Interglacial changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide: the critical role of ocean surface water in high latitudes in: The carbon Cycle and Atmospheric CO2: Natural Variations Archaean to Present (Sundquist and Broecker, eds.), AGU Geophysical Monograph 32,
Washington D.C. pp.163-184.

February 7 -
We will discuss Figures 2,4,5,7,8,10 and Tables 1 and 3 of: Quay et al. (1991). Carbon isotopic composition of atmospheric CH4: fossil and biomass burning source strengths Global Biogeochemical Cycles 5(1):25-47.

February 18 -
We will discuss Sabine et al. (2004) The oceanic sink for anthropogenic CO2. Science 305 2004:367-371.

Another useful paper in the same issue of Science discusses the carbon cycle in terms of both the solubility and biological pumps: Takahashi (2004).  This is a good background for the Sabine paper and is ONLY TWO PAGES LONG (including figure)!

March 4 -
We will discuss House (2003) Reconciling apparent inconsistencies in estimates of terrestrial CO2 sources and sinks
