The Ship Is.......Moving!

Thompson is continually moving under the influence of wind and waves, and most people naturally associate the terms "rolling" and "pitching" with that motion. But did you know that there is much more to a ship's movement than simply those two?

Roll - oscillation about the longitudinal axis; rolling from left to right
Pitch - oscillation about the transverse axis; the bow moves down and stern up (and vice versa)
Heave - oscillatory rise and fall of the entire hull; the whole ship moves up and down
Yaw - oscillation about the vertical axis; bow moves left and stern moves right (and vice versa)
Surge - bodily motion forward and backward along the longitudinal axis; the whole ship moves forwards and backwards
Sway - side-to-side bodily motion; the whole ship move to the left and then right

Because of one of these motions, many people find themselves heaving even when the ship isn't.

To which type of motion are people the most sensitive?
