Neil Banas
I'm an ecosystem and biogeochemical modeler, with a particular interest in plankton ecology, and a background in coastal and estuarine physical oceanography. I'm co-PI, with Parker MacCready, of the UW Coastal Modeling Group.
I work on 1) earth-system interactions in coastal waters (how river inputs, atmospheric forcing, and open-ocean processes conspire to transmit climate change and variability to a particular coastal region, with an emphasis on the Pacific Northwest) and 2) the effects of planktonic diversity and trophic interactions on ecosystem function (current projects in the Bering Sea, German Bight, and Mathematical Funland).
I also teach environmental humanities through the UW Program on the Comparative History of Ideas (CHID).
Some of my plankton, ecosystem, and circulation models can be played with on the web.
My main research page is here.
