Labrador Sea surface circulation
and the fate of the Irminger Sea Water
The Labrador Sea is fundamental to the world ocean circulation
as it is one of the few locations where deep convection occurs.
The three other main deep convection sites are the Greenland Sea, the Gulf of Lion
in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Weddell Sea in Antarctica.
The boundary
circulation of the Labrador Sea is made of three main currents: the West Greenland Current,
the Labrador Current and the North atlantic Current at the southern limit.
I used surface drifters, hydrographic sections and 2 PALACE floats to study the
boundary circulation of the Labrador Sea as an ensemble and to trace the
pathways of the Irminger Sea Water. The figures from my paper are reproduced in the following pages.
