Perchloric Acid Hood Instructions
The perchloric acid hood must be flushed of all residues on a weekly
basis to prevent the build up of dangerous explosive compounds.
Perchloric Acid Cautions
As an aqueous solution it can cause violent explosions if improperly
handled.
It reacts with other substances to form unstable materials that are
susceptible to exploding either by impact, friction, or spontaneous combustion.
General Safety Practices
Spilled perchloric acid should be washed away with large amounts of
water.
The use of organic chemicals or materials in the hood should be avoided.
Goggles or other effective eye protection should be used whenever possible,
as well as utilization of the fume hood sash for safety.
Gas flames or oil bathes should not be used within the hood.
Organic chemicals should not be kept in storage areas set aside for
perchloric acid storage.
Wash-down procedure should be performed after completion of usage with
all apparatus removed from hood.
Wash-Down Procedure
On the wall to the left of the hood are the flushing instructions.
Turn the top valve on.
Then turn the other valve on.
Caution!!
Be aware that water will drip down onto the general working area from
the baffles above so cover your work to prevent contamination.
