Eastern Pacific Ocean Conference 2012 SESSIONS & ABSTRACT SUBMITTAL DEADLINE 23 July
Sessions have been chosen and abstract submittal is open for the 2012 Eastern Pacific Ocean Conference (EPOC) 19-22 September, Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, Oregon! Note that abstracts are DUE Monday 23 July 2012.
We are very excited to announce the speaker for our fireside chat, Dr. Bill Peterson, as well as the following sessions that we think highlight important directions in Eastern Pacific Ocean science while representing a broad interdisciplinary array of scientific questions:
1. Upwelling Intensification: Fact or Fiction? (co-chairs: Steve Bograd & Bill Sydeman)
2. Deoxygenation and acidification in waters of the Eastern Pacific (co-chairs: Ryan Rykaczewski & Samantha Siedlecki)
3. Nearshore physics and biology (co-chairs: Kerry Nickols & Brock Woodson)
4. How does basin-scale variability affect the connectivity of the California Current System (CCS): its currents and ecosystems? (co-chairs: Chris Mooers & Bill Peterson)
5. General Session (chair: Jim Lerczak)
Please see the EPOC 2012 website for additional information regarding the scientific sessions, location, registration, and abstract submittal. Please note that ABSTRACTS ARE DUE MONDAY 23 JULY 2012!

For those unfamiliar with the EPOC conferences, EPOC serves as a catalyst each year for the ocean community in the Northwest and across the west coast of North America to come together, share ideas, mentor students, and support innovative science. It is the “favorite” meeting of many ocean scientists, as it is relatively small (60-100 ocean scientists) and encourages extended interdisciplinary discussions (frequently on mountain trails and over shared meals in scenic surroundings) among biological, physical, and chemical oceanographers. EPOC is particularly friendly to junior scientists fostering a positive environment and encouraging students to practice their presentation skills and networking. Meetings typically include an informal and provocative “fireside chat” by a senior scientist (this year we are lucky to have Dr. Bill Peterson), a banquet dinner, lively poster session, and awards for best student presentations.
We anticipate a great meeting in September and hope you will choose to join us. Please share this information with any colleagues that come to mind and feel free to contact Sarah if you have any questions,
Thank you!
Sarah Giddings & Dave Sutherland, Co-chairs, 59th annual EPOC meeting
