Introduction

The R/V THOMAS G. THOMPSON (AGOR-23) was constructed by Halter Marine and funded by the U.S. Navy. The vessel was delivered to ONR on 8 July 1991 and is operated by the University of Washington, under a Charter Party Agreement, on behalf of NORCOR. The R/V THOMPSON is a thoroughly modern vessel capable of multidisciplinary research in most oceans of the world.

This handbook provides information on the operational capabilities of the vessel and guidance on various policies, regulations, procedures, safety, and lifesaving precautions. The intent is to assist the chief scientist and members of the scientific party in preparing for a cruise and successfully accomplishing the scientific mission, while maintaining a harmonious relationship with support personnel and the ship's crew. While the Master and Chief Scientist have considerable latitude in the accomplishment of a scientific mission, any major deviation from standard procedures and policies must be approved by the School well in advance of the cruise.

The R/V THOMPSON and support personnel have the sole purpose of implementing scientific research and it is the intent of the School to be responsive to the needs of the researcher. Please contact appropriate support personnel, as necessary, for additional information and assistance.
