PhD, Earth Sciences, University of Minnesota, 2018. Dr. Hoffman is working with Dr. Randelle Bundy, UW School of Oceanography, and Dr. Joseph Resing, CICOES-NOAA, to examine how iron-binding organic ligands stabilize dissolved iron in deep-sea hydrothermal plumes. She is interested in investigating organic-metal relationships in aqueous environments and has spent the last decade exploring these processes in hydrothermal plumes. Currently, she has a project funded to look at different metal-binding organic ligands across geochemically distinct hydrothermal systems to better understand this distribution and identify specific organic compounds involved in metal stabilization. The results from this research will advance our current understanding of how hydrothermal vents influence global geochemical cycles, and impact phytoplankton growth in the surface waters.
