I am a member of the Sediment Dynamics Group; we study the connections between hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and geomorphology.

My Master's thesis focused on the impact of the 2011-2014 Elwha River dam removals on sediment transport and kelp around the mouth of the river. During the dam removals, the coastal kelp died off. Kelp are an important species because they provide habitat for other species, so it's important to understand what killed them. A dramatic amount of sediment was released during the dam removals, increasing the amount of mud suspended in the water close to shore. Less sunlight reached the seabed, and this is the most likely cause of the dramatic kelp die-off. 

For my Ph.D. I am looking at sediment transport in the Ayeyarwady River delta, Myanmar, and in Tauranga Harbor, New Zealand. I am investigating the processes which keep lowlying, coastal areas above sea level over large (200 kilometers) to small (centimeters) spatial scales. And, I am investigating the impact of mangrove removal (deforestation) in these locations.
