Mikelle Nuwer, a Senior Lecturer, teaches introductory oceanography courses at the University of Washington. She develops & assesses curriculum for oceanography, was a Lead Facilitator for the UW Evidence-based Teaching Project & coordinator of UW sponsored High School Oceanography 101 courses. She is also responsible for the training and mentoring of graduate teaching assistants.
I am currently the co-chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee for the School of Oceanography. Our committee is actively working on improving the recruitment and retention of black, indigenous, and people of color in our school. Our main areas of focus are on revising the admission criteria for graduate admissions, creating a handbook for faculty hiring, and creating a supportive environment for our students, faculty and staff.
