Bachelor of Science Degree - Basic Science Courses

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Oceanography (180 credits):  Oceanography, Basic Science, Upper Division Science and Other Courses


Basic Science Core Courses (55 required credits)

These courses may have prerequisites, so make sure that you consult the course catalog (links are provided).

MATH:

Three quarters of Mathematics are required. Students must select one of the following sequences. Students considering graduate school, or interested in the physical oceanography option, should take MATH 124/125/126

PHYSICS:

Three quarters of Physics are required.  Students must select one of the following sequences (Calculus or Algebra based). Students considering graduate school, or interested in the physical oceanography or marine geology and geophysics options, should take PHYS 121/122/123

PHYS 114, 115, 116

BIOLOGY:

Two quarters of Biology are required. Students interested in the biological oceanography option should add the third quarter (Biol 220).

GEOLOGY:

One quarter of Geology selected from these three courses is required.  Those students with a strong background in science and an interest in physical oceanography or marine geology and geophysics should take ESS 210.

CHEMISTRY:

Two quarters of chemistry are required. Students interested in the chemical oceanography option should take the third quater (CHEM 162).
