Ocean Currents 12/13/22

Congratulations Hannah Dawson
Dr. Hannah Dawson successfully defended her Ph.D. on Dec 13, 2022. Hannah is in the Jodi Young lab and is Jodi's first student to complete a Ph.D. Her research focused on metabolomics in polar oceans and how microbes respond to temperature and salinity changes associated with sea ice. Congratulations, Hannah!
R/V Rachel Carson decked out for the season
A big hearty thanks to First Mate Charlie Seibel and Captain Brian Bare for their hard work creating a stunning visual masterpiece for last Friday's Holiday Boat Parade in Lake Union. Well done! The Parade of Boats traveled through the Fremont Cut after convening in Lake Union. Warm 106.9’s Shellie Hart was emcee and she reportedly loved our ship and its jellyfish lights (among other great things). While you are checking it out, go follow the Carson on Instagram for great content.
Buildings to be closed during the holidays
Our Oceanography buildings will remain locked during business hours beginning this weekend, and they will not reopen automatically until Winter Quarter begins in January. So remember to bring your swipe card and keys with you, and please be vigilant about allowing outsiders into UW buildings. There have been a number of homeless folk finding shelter in UW buildings at night. If you find a homeless person in our buildings, please call UW police as they have shelter and food options available.
Ocean Currents is a weekly bulletin of news and upcoming events for the UW School of Oceanography. If you have news or stories to contribute, please contact Su Tipple.
