The Banse Seminar Series Evolves
Please join us for this year’s final talk of the Banse Seminar Series on Wednesday, December 9. As this year’s series wraps up, we want to take a moment to reflect on Karl Banse and to share some exciting news regarding this seminar.
This series was named for Karl Banse, who has been a long-standing pillar of our community. Karl has stated that besides hard work and perseverance, major turns in his career were decided with a great deal of luck “be it through an accidental conversation at lunch, an almost-missed phone call or attendance at a somewhat strange seminar.”
In the spirit of Karl’s words, the Banse Oceanography Seminar will be refocusing to the Banse Early Career Scientist Seminar Series (BECSSS). We will focus on bringing graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career scientists from underrepresented backgrounds to our department to share their innovative research and to connect with our faculty on future career opportunities. These BECSSS scholars will come from all over the country and the world to bring their research to us at UW. We will host them in person and virtually to create collaborations with researchers here in the School of Oceanography.
This is a great opportunity to expand our oceanography community. If you have nominations for a BECSS scholar, please fill out the nomination form here.

Afloat: Work/Life Balance
Each week we highlight some of the personal accomplishments submitted by your fellow oceanographers. This week we are congratulating Charlie Daniels (UG) for fixing his broken axle one year ago. Congratulations, Charlie! If you'd like to be highlighted for a personal accomplishment, please email Michelle Townsend at email@example.com.
As we adjust to a difficult new normal, how to help ourselves and others can be unclear. Here’s a resource provided by the UW that may be of help: Working during COVID-19/Caring for self and family/Self care.
