BECSSS Scholar Nominations
This fall quarter 2021, we are kicking off the Banse Early Career Scientist Seminar Series (BECSSS) and we are actively seeking nominations. We hope to bring graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career scientists from underrepresented backgrounds to our department to share their innovative research and to connect with our faculty on future career opportunities. You can go directly to the nomination form here, or check out the BECSSS webpage here. Nominations will remain open through June, with decisions and invitations made over the summer.
If you want to join Race Talk this quarter, we'd still love to have you! Our next meeting will be on February 22nd at 11am. You can register at this link and you can sign up for a book to read this quarter that sounds interesting to you. Most of the groups set up a reading calendar so you should be able to jump right in. As a reminder, all of these books are available from the UW Library.
Afloat: Work/Life Balance
What gives you hope for the future of 2021? The new afloat challenge is Hoping Forward, a collection of our community's hopes for the future to be shared as another word cloud. Let us know what you are hopeful for, or looking forward to, by filling out the form on our website or DMing your information on our Instagram account. One random individual from all the entries will win a nifty little handmade wooden clock. It's gonna be super cute, so submit your entry today!
We will continue to highlight some of the personal accomplishments submitted by your fellow oceanographers. We need more submissions. A call will go out soon or you can email Michelle Townsend at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As we adjust to a difficult new normal, how to help ourselves and others can be unclear. Here’s a resource provided by the UW that may be of help: Working during COVID-19/Caring for self and family/Self care.
