Ocean Currents 7/10/20

Hello Fellow Oceanographers,

Congratulations to you all! We retained our #1 international ranking for the 3rd year in a row. Thank you for your hard work, your dedication, your discoveries, and your kindness. Spread the news to your friends – we’re number one! (cue Queen’s “We are the Champions”) https://tinyurl.com/UWOcean1

As a reward, and to stay mindful that we remain locked in a horribly disruptive pandemic, today the Afloat team launches our summer challenge: BINGO. This is a 9-week challenge with layered prizes for everyone who completes the different phases. The first reward is a new enamel pin with the school’s logo on it. This is a limited-edition pin, so get started with your social distancing Bingo. https://www.ocean.washington.edu/story/Ocean_Bingo_Challenge

The School has been working with various individuals and groups to better understand the challenges that we face regarding equity and racism. Voting faculty will be meeting in two weeks to discuss the first draft of our new roadmap for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. We have work to do, we are up to the challenge. As I mentioned last missive, the School will soon launch a culture survey so that we can learn where we need the most movement and where we are doing okay.

In closing, let me mention that I am personally excited about the new Bingo challenge and I hope it helps you stay connected and safe as the pandemic drags on and on. I believe that we are a great community, and that is reflected in our #1 ranking but also in our friendliness and willingness to protect each other from the virus. The pandemic is so tiring and demoralizing, yet I see you all staying strong and helping each other. Thank you for that.
