News from the School of Oceanography Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
This summer the DEI Committee is working on drafting a Diversity Plan for the School of Oceanography. We are making slow but steady progress and will have a draft to share and solicit feedback from our community this fall.
Randie Bundy is taking the lead on revising and resubmitting our application to the AGU Bridge Program (https://www.agu.org/bridge-program). As a participating institution, we would have access to a network of resources to help us learn how to attract, recruit, and retain underrepresented minority graduate student applicants.
Mikelle and LuAnne, in collaboration with Kerry Naisch and Jose Guzman, were recently funded through the NSF IUSE-Geopaths program for a bridge for underrepresented undergraduate community college students transfering to UW marine sciences. The bridge will include a two-week, in-residence program at Friday Harbor Labs to help prepare the transfer students for personal and academic success at UW.
Much of the diversity-related work in our department is happening outside of the DEI Committee. For example, the hiring committee received training for creating inclusive hiring processes by Joyce Yen from UW Advance. They are also taking advantage of existing resources for best practices from the UW Office of faculty advancement: https://www.washington.edu/diversity/faculty-advancement/handbook/
We have a new diversity page on the School website! Check it out at https://www.ocean.washington.edu/story/Diversity_Equity_and_Inclusion
We have had folks leave the committee and new members join.

As we adjust to a difficult new normal, how to help ourselves and others can be unclear. Here’s a resource provided by the UW that may be of help: Working during COVID-19/Caring for self and family/Self care.
